Volt Teardown: Battery pack parts list

24 April 2012

Here are select components used in the design of the Chevrolet Volt 360V battery pack:

  1. LG Chem Battery Management ASSP, by STMicro in proprietary BCD Technology. The L9763 is a full ASIC with intellectual property shared by LG.
  2. Freescale microcontroller: MPC5516
  3. Freescale microcontroller: S9S08DZ32 (Click here for related parts)
  4. Spansion, MirrorBit Flash: GL512N11FFA02. Spansion engineering innovations include the company’s award-winning MirrorBit™ technology. This proprietary two-bit-per-cell technology features a simpler cell structure than traditional multi-level cell (MLC) approaches, and therefore eliminates 10 percent of the total manufacturing steps and 40 percent of the most critical manufacturing steps as compared to floating-gate MLC NOR, resulting in 30 percent higher yield than floating-gate MLC NOR technologies.
  5. Freescale Display Controller: SPC5121YVY400B. The MPC5121e/MPC5123 integrates a high performance e300 CPU core based on the Power Architecture Technology with a rich set of peripheral functions focused on communications and systems integration.
  6. Freescale 2-bit “Qoriwa” embedded controller: MPC5566. Designed for engine management, the Qorivva MPC5566 32-bit embedded controller is the first device from Freescale's Qorivva MPC55xx family to integrate 3 MB of embedded flash memory, qualified for the harshest automotive environment and offering full read while write (RWW) capability.
  7. Renesas controller: M30291. The M16C/29 Group of single-chip control MCU incorporates the M16C/60 series CPU core, employing the high-performance silicon gate CMOS technology and sophisticated instructions for a high level of efficiency.
  8. Spansion MirrorBit Flash: S29GL512P10TE512. The Spansion S29GL01G/512/256/128P are Mirrorbit® Flash products fabricated on 90 nm process technology. These devices offer a fast page access time of 25 ns with a corresponding random access time as fast as 90 ns.
  9. Freescale SDRAM/DDR Memory Controller: SC103335VR400B. Axial Power Schottky rectifier suited for Switch Mode Power Supplies and high frequency DC to DC converters. Packaged in DO41 these devices are intended for use in low voltage, high frequency inverters, free wheeling, polarity protection and small battery chargers.
  10. Zentel 256 Mb SDRAM: A3S56D40ETP-GS1. A3S56D30ETP is a 4-bank x 8,388,608-word x 8bit, A3S56D40ETP is a 4-bank x 4,194,304-word x 16bit double data rate synchronous DRAM, with SSTL_2 interface. The A3S56D30/40ETP achieves very high speed clock rate up to 200 MHz .
  11. Sony GCIF Receiver: CXB1458R. The CXB1457R/1458R is a chipset using GVIF (Gigabit Video Interface) technology. The GVIF chipset enables high speed transmission of uncompressed digital video over a single twisted pair cable in motor vehicle applications. The CXB1457R is the transmitter. The CXB1458R is the receiver.
  12. Renesas 32/16 Bit Microprocessor: R5F3650MDFB. The M16C/65 Group microcomputer (MCU) incorporates the M16C/60 Series CPU core and flash memory, employing sophisticated instructions for a high level of efficiency. This MCU has 1 MB of address space (expandable to 4 MB), and it is capable of executing instructions at high speed. In addition, the CPU core boasts a multiplier for high-speed operation processing.
  13. Cypress Programmable SOC: CY8C21534-24PVXA. These devices are designed to replace multiple traditional microcontroller unit (MCU)-based system components with one, low-cost single-chip programmable component. A PSoC device includes configurable blocks of analog and digital logic, and programmable interconnect. This architecture makes it possible for you to create customized peripheral configurations, to match the requirements of each individual application.
  14. LG Bluetooth Module: LBMA-2C66B7. A Class 2 (4dBm) Bluetooth transceiver designed for mobile handsets, personal computers and automotive telematics. The output power is +2dBm Class 2, and input sensitivity is -83 dBm. The interface can be UART, USB, and PCM.

great article, 100 Micros 438 LB's, 96 cells to get 360 VDC, made in South Korea until moved hre next year…….. You guys really did a great job. What is a prismatic shapped cell…plates are 5 X 7 inches and why prism shaped??.3 tied to get more currentper cell I guess and the 96 of those series wired. Thank you for this terrific article. I don't read hunting and fishing magazines so this is great.   smithvolt@roadrunner.com
