ASU engineers to receive torn-down Chevy Volt

TEMPE, Ariz.–When we tore down a black Chevy Volt in January, we weren't just going to throw it away once we finished with it.

As any engineer knows, "parts is parts," and you can do amazing things with those parts and a little imagination. We thought about where to donate the vehicle, and universities immediately came to mind. Then we found out that the engineering students at Arizona State University here had lost some funding for some really cool projects they'd done over the years.

We decided ASU would be a worthy recipient. We told three members of the ASU Society of Automotive Engineers team about it as we interviewed them in their lab on campus, just to surprise them.

Here are (left to right in the video) Brian Jackson, Wade Gyllenhaal and Harald Schweitzer getting the good news. And below that is the April 14 public announcement in which Avnet VP for supplier management Alex Iuorio and Avnet CEO Rick Hamada talk about about the Drive for Innovation and the donation:

Question: Is it possible to remove the range extension engine and still have a fully functioning Volt? 
Reason: In our (small) country, typical travel distances are short and the full charge range of 150km is more than enough for a normal day.  Removing the range extension engine will make the Volt lighter and add a few more km's.
Issues/Doubts that come to mind: balance of the vehicle, controls that need to be rewired or reprogrammed, …

    What a good idea. I wonder if GM has thought of this – might be a simple option that would help the saleability of this excellent car.
